In Kennedy Township, two local business owners are collecting relief supplies for victims of Hurricane Helene.

Kevin Pike, of K&B Doormasters in Kenmawr Plaza, said he felt the need to do something after seeing the devastation online.

Thousands are still without power, over 200 are dead, and damage is estimated in the billions from Hurricane Helene.

Within minutes of reaching out to fellow garage door companies in the hurricane affected areas, Pike received multiple messages that emergency supplies were necessary. “I said I have empty trucks sitting here, so let’s put them to use,” he said.

After getting the word out on social media, Pike had two truckloads of supplies within a week, with more supplies arriving daily.

“My spirits have been lifted so much in the last week since I started doing this,” he said. “It’s amazing to me just to see people coming together to help these folks.”

Pike reached out to Connie Roe Feda, owner of Cookie Cookie Ice Cream Company in Kennedy Center, to ask if her store would become an additional drop-off point. Feda was more than happy to oblige. “This could happen to literally anybody, you know.” Her sister lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, which didn’t suffer nearly the amount of damage as other parts of the state.

Items dropped off at Cookie Cookie Ice Cream Company so far include diapers, formula, pet food, cleaning supplies, tissue, paper towels and over the counter medicine like ibuprofen.

On Monday, 64 packages were delivered to K&B from the North Carolina Supply Run 2024 wishlist Pike established through online retailer Amazon.

Items still needed include:

  • Solar lights
  • Motor oil
  • Propane stoves
  • Kitty litter
  • Charcoal grills
  • Laundry detergent
  • Winter jackets
  • Wool socks
  • Winter gloves and hats
  • Toys
  • Lamps and lamp oil
  • Flashlights
  • N-95 masks
  • Duct tape
  • Extension cords
  • Sleeping bags

Donations are being accepted in person and through the wishlist until October 11. Pike and his convoy then intend to make their way South toward Asheville, North Carolina and as close to the devastated area as possible for delivery.

K&B Doormasters is located at 500 Pine Hollow Road with hours of 9:30 a.m. to 6 p m.  Cookie Cookie Ice Cream Company at 1815 McKees Rocks Road is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
