Unexpected iPhone Update Nearly Here, Report Says

Since the iPhone 16 was launched on Sept. 20, there have been no updates to the iOS 18 software (apart from a surprise new version with the same iOS 18 numbering for a smaller number of iPhones only). Now, it looks more likely than ever that there’ll be two important updates in October alone.

Apple had previously said that the first chance to savor Apple Intelligence would come with iOS 18.1, and confirmed that October would be the month that would be released.

However, last week, a report circulated that iOS 18.0.1 would be the next time we’d need to upgrade, and obviously such a release would come before iOS 18.1.

Now, another source has doubled down on suggesting that iOS 18.0.1 would be coming soon.

That source is a private account with a strong track record, according to 9to5Mac. It said, “The release of iOS 18.0.1 is imminent. The information was shared on social media by a private account with a strong track record. The account has previously shared details about upcoming iOS software updates on multiple different occasions. According to the account, iOS 18.0.1 will have the build number 22A3370.”

The build number is more important than it sounds because it adds weight to the rumor and, assuming it’s right, burnishes the credentials of the private account holder.

So, how soon is imminently? According to MacRumors, “It is unclear when iOS 18.0.1 will be released to the public, but our best guess is the update will be available either this week or next week.”

Apple will want to release this update as soon as possible if, as projected, it is designed to address touchscreen issues with some iPhone 16 and earlier models, and tackle a bug in the Messages app which causes crashes when an Apple Watch face is shared. It may also mean the iPadOS 18 update which was pulled after it bricked some iPad Pro models with M4 processors will return.

Although Tuesday is Apple’s favorite day of the week for iOS releases, we may not have to wait until Tuesday, Oct. 8 for the update—Thursday, Oct. 3 and Friday Oct. 4 are possibilities. Whenever it turns out to be, we’ll be covering the release here on Forbes.
