Tinanong ni Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino, chairman ng Senate Special Committee on Maritime and Admiralty Zones, si Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) Menardo Guevara sa Senate hearing para sa panukalang 2025 budget ng Department of Justice (DOJ) nitong Agosto 28, tungkol sa update ng 2022 pa niya hinihiling na specialized unit ng prosecutors na tututok sa international maritime disputes, partikular sa West Philippine Sea.
“If we are going to hire an admiralty lawyer for every harassment, why haven’t we formed a special admiralty unit within SolGen, has it been done?” tanong ni Senator Tol.
Bilang tugon, sinabi ni Guevarra na tumulong ang isang ad hoc team ng mga abogado ng OSG sa iba’t ibang task force ng gobyerno na humahawak sa international concerns, gaya ng usapin sa West Philippine Sea, International Criminal Court (ICC), state-to-state arbitration, at international arbitration at mga pagtatalo, kabilang ang iba pa.
Kinilala naman ni Senator Tol ang mga pagsisikap ng OSG, ngunit binigyang-din ang kahalagahan ng pagtatatag ng isang special unit.
“We note the continuous efforts, however, I hope that this is not just an ad hoc unit; it must be institutionalized with competent lawyers permanently manning the floor,” giit ni Senator Tol.
