There Is An Urgent Need For Foster Homes For Animals In An Atlanta Shelter Ahead Of Hurricane Helene
LifeLine Animal Project is putting out an urgent call for help for 60 dogs in Atlanta, Georgia, that need temporary or permanent homes ahead of Hurricane Helene.
Unfortunately, the dogs are living at the old Fulton County animal shelter, which is in danger of flooding during the storm.
“LifeLine Animal Project is bracing for bad weather which could lead to flooding and/or power outages in our city’s animal shelters. We need your help getting more pets into homes,” a Facebook post states. “60 dogs were moved here due to the severe overcrowding at the new shelter but they can’t stay here. This location, built in the 70s, has a history of flooding during large storms and flash flood warnings are expected in the next few days. Homes are URGENTLY needed.”
The DeKalb County shelter and LifeLine Community Animal Center also need to reduce overcrowding of pets before Helene arrives. But the old shelter at 860 Marietta Blvd. NW has the greatest need.
“We urgently need to find homes for all dogs living at this shelter either temporarily for a few days, or permanently through adoptions,” LifeLine informed us by email. “The animals were moved there temporarily due to the severe overcrowding at the new shelter amid an ongoing paint project which has further impacted our spacing needs.”
The hurricane is expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hits Atlanta on Friday, but heavy rain, flooding, and tornadoes are still possible.
The old Fulton shelter is open special hours today until 7 p.m. and on Thursday, September 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in an effort to get the dogs into new homes. If you aren’t local or aren’t able to foster right now, you can still help by donating to LifeLineAnimal.org/help-save-lives. Stay safe!
