Sweet Grey Cat Seeing Her Dad’s Wallet for the First Time Since He Passed Has Everyone in Tears
Losing a father is tough for everybody. It’s just not something a lot of us even think about, so when it happens, it’s very sudden or, at the very least, very sad.
That goes for cats, too, apparently: on Thursday, June 13th, one grey cat got to see her dad’s wallet since the first time he passed. The way she reacts to it shows just how much she really misses him, and even though it’s sad, it’s so beautiful that you definitely have to take a look:
My heart hurts so badly for Gem and @deesuze. I can’t even imagine what they’re both going through – and, sweet as it is, this can’t possibly have been easy for Gem’s mom to witness.
Gem has a few other siblings who live with her, and she was lucky enough to live with her dad for a long time before his passing. He was also her mom’s dad, so they’ve had to learn how to grieve together. For some reason yesterday, his old wallet ended up on mom’s bed, and Gem ran right over – she recognized his scent and, evidently, she really misses it.
Gem, her late dad, and her mom have gone through a lot together. She was adopted from a shelter a while back, and she was declawed in a previous home, which made life tough enough to navigate. With some love and a lot of their help, though, she came out of her shell and became the best cat ever. Now, she’s grieving, too.
Cats Love and Miss Their Humans
Cats get a little bit of a reputation for being cold and unfeeling, for some reason. Anti-cat individuals won’t hesitate to tell you that a cat will eat your body when you die – and while that’s technically true, the cat would have to be starving. At that point, your dog might do the exact same thing.
In reality, cats are extremely emotionally intelligent and they form incredible bonds with their favorite humans. Cats are every bit as snuggly and eager to spend time with you as dogs are, and when their humans pass, they miss them and will even spend time sniffing their belongings or sitting in their usual spots waiting them them to come back.
The degree to which cats and dogs understand death as a whole is unclear, but they definitely notice your absence. When a human (or, honestly, another animal) in your home passes, take care to spend extra time with them and make sure they’re still eating, drinking water, and getting enough exercise. It may take a while for them to find a groove!
