Suspected Mpox case reported in Mandaue City

THE Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH 7) has recorded one suspected case of Monkeypox (Mpox) in Mandaue City.

However, local health officials are urging the public not to panic, as the case is still under investigation by the health agency.

Dr. Debra Catulong, head of the Mandaue City Health Office, said the patient, a 39-year-old male with no recent travel history outside Cebu, consulted health authorities on Thursday, May 29, 2025, after noticing skin lesions.

He has since been placed under home isolation and was provided with a medical and food assistance kit.

Specimen samples have already been collected and sent to DOH 7, which will forward them to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) for confirmatory testing.

Catulong emphasized that while the case is still unconfirmed, the public should remain vigilant.

She advised residents to isolate at home or seek medical attention if they notice unusual skin rashes or other suspicious symptoms.

She also reminded the public to practice preventive measures such as wearing face masks, frequent handwashing, and avoiding crowded areas.

While home care—such as staying hydrated, resting, and taking paracetamol—can help relieve symptoms, Catulong stressed the importance of medical consultation, especially if symptoms persist or worsen. (CAV)
