Splitgate 2 dev apologizes as server downtime hampers crucial new beta

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the Splitgate 2 open beta for a while. Set to stay live until it fully launches in the summer, it’s an endless opportunity to play my most anticipated new FPS game, and now it’s finally here. Imagine my disappointment, then, when I awoke this morning to find its servers offline – and they’ve remained that way the entire day. While some players have had a fairly smooth experience, there’ve been some widespread issues with cosmetic items not showing and general server instability. After hours of downtime, 1047 Game’s CEO has apologized for the bumpy start to the open beta, promising that the studio is “working around the clock” to get things up and running again.

If you’re a regular PCGamesN reader, you’ve probably seen my misty-eyed ramblings on Splitgate 2 already. I adored the feel and concept of the first game, and now its sequel reimagines its unique combination of Halo-esque gunplay and Portal-esque, erm, portals in Unreal Engine 5. The launch of the FPS game‘s open beta yesterday was meant to be a momentous occasion, adding several new maps and modes and introducing its extensive custom map editor. However, it’s been hampered by technical issues.

Just a few hours after the beta went live, there were reports of cosmetic items (both unlockable and purchasable ones) not displaying in players’ inventories. Twitch Drop items were also not being made available. Plus, there were general server wobbles across the board. Given how its previous beta was incredibly smooth and solid, this is quite the surprise.

At the time of writing, Splitgate 2’s servers have been offline for around 14 hours, with no timeframe for getting them up and running again. 1047 says this is so they can make all the appropriate bug fixes and server improvements needed. “Everyone should be able to experience Splitgate 2 as intended, and we won’t stop working until you do,” an X post on the game’s official account reads.

Given the length of the downtime, 1047’s CEO Ian Proulx has now released a video statement apologizing for the disruption.

“This is not the spot we thought we’d be in 24 hours after the launch of the beta,” Proulx says. “We thought we’d be in great shape by now, and obviously that’s not the case. We’re really sorry. This is what we’ve been working on for years – what I’ve personally been working on since college, ten years ago. I don’t know what to say, I’m so sorry.”

He says that developers have been “grinding” throughout the night and are still “working around the clock” to fix the server issues. Proulx also assures that all cosmetics, earned or bought, will be available to you once the issues are resolved.

“Any skin that you purchased or earned, it’s all there, it’s all in our system. You have not lost it, you have my word. It will be there, do not worry.”

A “more concrete” update on the status of the servers and, hopefully, a rough timeline on when players will be able to jump back in, will be arriving later today, May 23.

This is a really disappointing start to the biggest moment in Splitgate 2’s life so far. The technical issues will certainly unnerve some players, but the big loss is that after all the hype it may not be playable for some or all of its first weekend. The saving grace is that the beta has no firm end date, and will simply end when the full Splitgate 2 release date arrives, so there’s still loads of time for 1047 to redeem itself and for players to be won over.
