Socialized housing moves forward

CONSTRUCTION of the P219-million socialized housing project in Barangay Calawisan, Lapu-Lapu City has progressed to the second floor, with the development set to initially accommodate at least 200 residents upon completion.

The development is part of several big-ticket infrastructure initiatives announced during outgoing Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan’s 2023 State of the City Address, alongside the Lapu-Lapu Expressway and the coastal road project.

In a phone interview with SunStar Cebu, Chan confirmed that the foundation work has been completed, marking a significant milestone since construction began on March 3, 2025 by Cebu-based construction firm Zumyrphil Construction, Inc.

“They are now preparing for the second floor of the five-storey building,” Chan said in a mix of Cebuano and English.

“The contract is for six months, we are hopeful the socialized housing will be finished before the end of 2025,” he added.

According to Chan, priority will be given to families displaced by the upcoming coastal road development and informal settlers residing in high-risk or unsafe areas.

The project moved forward following the donation of a two-hectare property by Johndorf Ventures Corp.

The City Government and the private developer formally signed the deed of donation on April 4, 2024.

On July 3 of the same year, the City Council approved a P227 million budget to back the construction of the housing units, but after the bidding process, the amount was slashed to P8 million.

The project is set to expand to 1,000 to 1,500 units, with each unit having a floor area of 24 square meters, across multiple five-story structures.

The development is part of the national government’s Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Program, launched under President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

It aims to eliminate informal settlements in the Philippines by 2028. / DPC
