
Security guard killed in Mandaue City road accident
A 36-YEAR-OLD security guard was killed in a tragic road accident early Friday morning, May 30, 2025, along A.S. Fortuna Street in Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City, just in front of an automobile showroom.
The incident occurred around 6:48 a.m., when the victim, identified as Joseph Avila Gabutan, a native of Cagayan de Oro City and currently employed as a security guard, was crossing the road after his duty shift.
Gabutan was reportedly heading out from the Chevrolet Auto Store when he was struck by a speeding motorcycle.
The motorcycle, a Yamaha XMAX BKAK 2025 in matte light gray and black, was being driven by a 27-year-old man known only by his alias, “Ed.” The suspect, a resident of Barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City, was heading toward Cebu City at the time of the incident.
According to the initial police investigation, both the driver and the victim were thrown to the pavement upon impact, sustaining injuries.
An ambulance promptly responded and rushed Gabutan to the Mandaue District Hospital.
However, he was declared dead on arrival at 6:55 a.m. by attending physician Dr. Tyrill Joseph G. Aliño.
The motorcycle sustained damage to its undercarriage and noticeable scratches along the right side.
Authorities have classified the incident as a case of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
