Rescue groups remove animals from shelters ahead of Helene

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – As Tropical Storm Helene makes its way toward Florida, animal rescue groups are spending this week trying to save dozens of animals from shelters.

Florida Urgent Rescue (FUR), along with other non-profits, are driving through the state removing dogs and cats from shelters that have outside kennels and those that are in low-lying areas.

Mike Merrill, the founder of FUR, says 13 dogs were taken out of the Union County shelter Tuesday, along with 29 cats and 6 dogs from the Wakulla County shelter.

“What we are trying to do is get them out of danger. We are trying to move them out of the storm, out of the path of flooding. Where we stand right now very well may be flooded by this time Thursday. We don’t know. It’s a very powerful storm.”
