PNP launches checkpoints to deter election-related violence

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) officially launched simultaneous Commission on Elections (Comelec) checkpoints on Sunday, January 12, 2025, marking the start of the election period for the May 12, 2025 National and Local Elections (NLE) and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Parliamentary Elections (Barmm PE).

In a statement, PNP chief General Rommel Marbil said Comelec checkpoints were established in strategic areas as part of security protocols to deter violence ahead of the polls.

The beginning of the election period also marks the start of the nationwide implementation of the gun ban, which means that all permits to carry firearms outside residence are suspended except to those who were able to secure exemption from the Comelec.

“We call on the public to cooperate fully with law enforcement officers manning the checkpoints. These measures, including the gun ban, are critical to ensuring peace and order throughout the election period. By working together, we can achieve a secure and orderly electoral process,” said Marbil.

The PNP emphasized that the security protocols being implemented are for the benefit of the public’s safety and are in line with Comelec’s directives.

All checkpoints will be conducted in accordance with established protocols, ensuring that individuals’ rights and privacy are respected.

“We urge everyone to be patient and understanding as these security measures are put in place. These are all for your safety, and we ask for your continued cooperation to help make this election season peaceful and secure,” he added.

The Comelec earlier reminded the public, especially motorists that checkpoints are limited by the plain view doctrine and security forces are not allowed to conduct a more stringent inspection unless there is clearly visible evidence or reasonable ground to justify it.

The election period will take effect until June 11, 2025. (TPM/SunStar Philippines)
