
Philippine Navy activates Western Mindanao Naval Command
THE Philippine Navy has activated the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) in place of the then Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) in line with its strategic realignment efforts.
The activation ceremony and unfurling of the new command flag was held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in Calarian, Zamboanga City, with Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta, Philippine Navy flag office-in-command, as the guest of honor and speaker.
The activation of WMNC reflected a significant organizational transformation aimed at enhancing command and control, operational reach, and maritime security posture in Western Mindanao.
The WMNC said Thursday, June 5, said it underscored the Navy s growing significance in the region and its forward-looking commitment to defending national sovereignty and maritime interests.
Coupled with the activation ceremony is the change of command and retirement ceremony in honor to the distinguished service of Rear Admiral Francisco Tagamolila Jr., who served as the last NFWM commander.
With the retirement of Tagamolila, Captain Hilarion Cecista, NFWM’s deputy commander for fleet operations, assumed the post of WMNC acting commander, ensuring leadership continuity as the command entered a new phase of operations.
Ezpeleta paid tribute to Tagamolila’s illustrious career, who service exemplified the finest ideals of duty, loyalty, and honor.
He also extended heartfelt gratitude to the family of Tagamolila, saying, “Behind every great officer is a family that serves with them. Their silent sacrifices are etched into the legacy we honor-one founded on integrity, purpose, and unwavering service.”
He said that as the Navy ushers in this new chapter, it remains anchored in the values and traditions that have shaped its identity, determined to meet future challenges with unity, strength, and resolve. (SunStar Zamboanga)
