Palm Garden Centre and Nursery sows seeds of sustainability and hope

For half a century, the Palm Garden Centre and Nursery in Mount Edgecombe has been a beacon of environmental stewardship in the community. This year, they proudly continue their longstanding tradition of donating trees, reaffirming their commitment to a greener, healthier future.

Over the past 50 years, the Palm Garden Centre has consistently given back to both the community and the environment by donating trees.

This initiative has become more than just a yearly event- it’s a legacy that continues to benefit everyone. Trees are more than a gift to those who plant them- they purify the air, provide shade, conserve water, and offer habitats for countless species.

“Our tree donation programme is about more than just planting trees. It’s about inspiring others to join in and take an active role in combating climate change and beautifying our surroundings. Whether you have a small garden, a large one, or even just a balcony, planting a tree is a small act that makes a huge difference,” said Shan Gangaparsad, owner of Palm Garden Centre.

In addition to their ongoing tree donation efforts, this year’s highlight is the inclusion of the Tree of the Year, Apodytes dimidiata, commonly known as the white pear. This particular species has been recognised for its unique ecological benefits and beauty. As part of their commitment, Palm Garden Centre gave away this tree as a free donation to a resident, showcasing their dedication to supporting local green spaces and fostering community involvement. The Palm Garden Centre invites everyone in the community to join in this important effort. The centre believes that by working together, it’s possible to grow a sustainable future for generations to come.
