One of the greatest roguelikes of all time is now less than $3

There are a number of roguelikes that continue to provide an excellent time even after having spent dozens of hours with them over the years. Darkest Dungeon and Hades, for example, or, more recently, Balatro and Vampire Survivors. There’s also FTL: Faster Than Light, a spaceship simulator that’s easy to approach, incredibly difficult to complete, and endlessly playable. It’s also available for less than $3 on Steam right now, making now a great time to try it out for yourself.

FTL: Faster Than Light first came out all the way back in 2012, marking one of the most successful entries to the resurgent roguelike game genre revival of that era. Since then, its creator, Subset Games, has put out only one other project, the time-bending tactics game Into the Breach, but FTL, with its intricate and compelling design, remains perhaps the studio’s finest work to date.

The goal of the game is straightforward, though every attempt at making it through FTL is rich with possibilities. As the player travels across the galaxy, they’re forced to make increasingly difficult choices when confronted with new enemies and allies, opportunities for trade and crew recruitment, and more. The combat, especially, is nerve-wracking, constantly carrying the possibility with it for run-terminating disasters or the start of ship-wide management crises that take careful consideration to navigate.
