NPA remnant killed, M16 rifle seized in Himamaylan clash
A REMNANT of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed and an M16 rifle was recovered during a brief encounter with government troops on Friday, June 6, 2025, in Sitio Bugtangan, Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.
Major General Michael Samson, commander of the 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division, with headquarters in Jamindan, Capiz, praised the quick response of the 94th Infantry (Mandirigma) Battalion, which engaged at least five members of the dismantled Central Negros 2 (CN2), Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor (KR-NCBS), following a tip from local residents.
“I commend the brave troops of the 94th Infantry Battalion and the unwavering support of the people, whose collaborative effort led to the successful neutralization of a Communist Terrorist Group remnant,” he said.
Samson urged those who are still loyal to a lost cause to surrender, reunite with their families, and start anew through the Enhanced-Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-Clip), saying there is still a chance for peace.
The firefight, which began around 4:30 p.m., lasted approximately five minutes. It resulted in the death of Jun-Jun Benoy, 24, also known as alias Gringo, a resident of Sitio Ompocon, Barangay Mahalang, Himamaylan City.
He was identified by former rebels as a member of Squad 2 of the dismantled CN2 unit.
Government forces recovered an M16 rifle and several personal items from the encounter site. Benoy’s remains were transported to Himamaylan City for proper disposition and to be returned to his family.
Military authorities said the operation forms part of continued efforts to prevent the resurgence of communist insurgents in Negros and the wider Visayas region. (Leo Solinap)
