Northwest Florida animal refuge takes in central Florida shelter animals due to Milton

FREEPORT, Fla. (WEAR) — Alaqua Animal Refuge in Walton County is taking in shelter animals Tuesday from Central Florida ahead of Hurricane Milton.

It’s an effort to keep the animals safe as the storm creeps closer to the coastline.

The animal refuge says 65 dogs flew in from Palm Beach, Florida. They were dropped off at the Panama City Airport.

Volunteers are now working to build kennels and get the dogs settled in.

We ended up having to purchase kennels because the state, because of other emergencies, were not able to provide us kennels, like normally would happen,” said Laurie Hood, founder and CEO of Alaqua. “We’ve had volunteers around the clock to put these kennels together. And we have lots of volunteers and some emergency relief work from around the state to come and stay with us and help us.”

Hood said they welcome donations. They are currently in need of blankets, towels, and collars.

Hood said they have a truckload of food and water coming to help their efforts.
