Nintendo Switch 2 Leak Reveals Early Unboxing Video Ahead Of Official Launch, Console Locked Until Day One Update
A leaked video shows the Nintendo Switch 2 retail unit unboxing days before the official launch, but it looks like Nintendo has locked the console until the day one update.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is, without a doubt, one of the most anticipated gaming consoles in recent years. With excitement at an all-time high, fans have been glued to every rumor, report, and leak that’s popped up online, especially as we inch closer to its official launch on June 5, 2025.
Ever since Nintendo first revealed a follow-up to the wildly popular Switch, there’s been a constant stream of speculation about what this next-gen device would bring to the table. Things kicked off late last year, with the first leaked images of a mockup of the console, then alleged specs started circulating, and finally, Nintendo stepped in to reveal some of the big upgrades: a larger 7.9-inch display, 12GB of fast LPDDR5X RAM, and new Joy-Cons with extra functionality.

Not only is the hardware getting a serious upgrade, but there are also some new features like custom button remapping and promised free upgrades for a bunch of Switch 1 games, making the wait feel even longer for longtime fans.
Leaked Unboxing Video Shows Retail Switch 2, But There’s a Catch
Now, things just got even more interesting. Just a week before launch, a short unboxing video has surfaced online, showing what looks to be a final, retail-ready Nintendo Switch 2. The video, posted by a YouTube user going by “a2dubai,” is only seven seconds long, but it gives fans a first real look at the console and its packaging.
The footage clearly shows the new Switch 2 in its box, complete with redesigned Joy-Cons, all neatly wrapped and ready for action. But before anyone gets too excited, there’s a major catch. According to the original poster, the console is locked and won’t work until it receives an update on launch day.

In the YouTube comments, the uploader explained: “Nintendo locked the switch 2, it needs [an] update to function, so I am waiting for June 5th to unlock it.” This is likely Nintendo’s way of stopping leaks and early gameplay videos, making sure everyone gets to experience the Switch 2 at the same time.

That also helps explain why hardly any media outlets have had the chance to post hands-on impressions or early reviews for the Switch 2. Nintendo seems to be holding review units back or locking them down, so nobody gets a jump on sharing in-depth details before the official launch.
For those curious about what’s coming, the Switch 2 will have that bigger, sharper display, improved performance thanks to the new processor, more RAM, a beefed-up GPU, and 256GB of internal storage. In other news, a new rumor suggests that Nintendo will be holding a new Direct presentation around the Switch 2 launch.
