(CNN) — Willy Wonka is back. The chocolatier and torturer of naughty children is getting the prequel treatment in a new film starring Timothée Chalamet, coming to cinemas in December.
Chalamet’s first footage as Roald Dahl character Wonka was released on Tuesday. In it, a young Wonka sets out to disrupt the chocolate business and dismantle a candy cabal.
Chalamet fills the shoes that Johnny Depp and Gene Wilder filled in 2005. Dahl’s 1964 story is not being retold. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” The writer-director Paul King imagined a plucky and striving take on this character in what he called a “companion piece” To the 1971 film

King revealed that the majority of the movie was shot on soundstages in studios. Some scenes, however, were shot on locations around the UK. This gives a sense of the hysteria and adoration for his star.
“I got an insight into Timothée Chalamet’s life, which is people leaning out of windows and screaming, ‘Marry me!'” He recalled, laughing. “It was quite strange … I don’t know what they thought was going to happen.”
King’s appreciation for Chalamet could be felt. “It was a huge commitment for him because it was a very long shoot and there was a lot (of) singing and dancing.”
“What’s so fabulous about him is you feel a lot of people his age would have been tempted to put on a superhero outfit and then sort of go and save the world,” He added. “And I managed to get him to put on a pair of heeled leather boots and do some tap dancing.”
