In a profoundly moving ceremony that captured the hearts of many, a 34-year-old cancer patient, Finesa Ayen Sanchez, exchanged vows with her longtime partner, Jurry Brigoli, in the chapel of a hospital in Mandaue City on Friday, May 23, 2025.

The impromptu wedding, organized with just a few hours’ notice, became a testament to enduring love and the compassionate spirit of the medical community.

Sanchez, who has been battling late-stage gastric cancer, had been confined to the hospital for nearly a month due to severe symptoms like vomiting and poor oral intake.

Her “common-law partner,” Jurry, approached the medical staff with an urgent request: their wedding, which had been planned for March 23 but postponed due to Finesa’s health, was meant to happen that very day.

Despite the unexpected timing, the hospital staff rallied together to make the couple’s dream a reality.

Dr. Ina Magbanua, an internal medicine resident on duty, recounted the swift coordination that ensued.

“It was a team effort between nursing services, ER Team, the Hospital Admin and the rest of the staff. Everyone just came together to make it all happen,” she shared.

Dr. Fidel Cascabel II, who initially attended to Sanchez in the emergency room, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the “so much compassion” displayed by everyone involved.

The medical team transformed the hospital chapel into a wedding venue, adorned with flowers, balloons, and cakes.

A priest was called to officiate, and the staff themselves became enthusiastic witnesses, cheering on the couple.

The emotional impact of the ceremony was palpable for Finesa and Jurry, who were finally tying the knot after 15 years of being together and raising six children.

Mae Jefferies, Jurry’s sister, shared their joy: “Happy ra si ate sa iyang wedding inside the chapel sa hospital kung diin siya na confine for almost 1 month na… Thank you bisan 3 hours notice lang and for your warm support and your loud cheers for the couple.”

She further detailed that despite Finesa’s physical discomfort, she persevered through the ceremony, visibly beaming with happiness, her tears interpreted as “tears of joy.”

The story of Finesa and Jurry’s hospital wedding quickly resonated on social media platforms, drawing an outpouring of support and heartfelt messages.

Users expressed awe at the couple’s enduring love and the medical staff’s kindness. Comments included sentiments like “God is good all the time! Praying for more strength and for God’s divine healing!” and “True love indeed. I pray that she will be okay. May she recover soon.”

Many praised the hospital and its staff for their humanity, with one user noting, “Mabuhay po kayo mga Frontliners! You are truly angels on earth!”

Another comment highlighted the bittersweet nature of the moment, stating, “So heartbreaking but inspiring at the same time.”

The story serves as a powerful reminder of love’s resilience in the face of adversity and the extraordinary compassion found within healthcare settings.
