Mountaineer cousin of Emil Sumangil dies in Mt. Everest summit attempt

Broadcast journalist Emil Sumangil’s cousin, Filipino mountaineer and engineer Philipp “PJ” Santiago II, tragically passed away while attempting to reach the peak of the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest.

A report by the Himalayan Times said Santiago breathed his last at Camp IV while preparing for the summit push on the night of May 14. The 45-year-old climber was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar–Snowy Everest Expedition 2025.

“Efforts are underway to bring his body down to base camp,” Managing Director at Snowy Horizon Treks, Bodhraj Bhandari, was quoted as saying. The exact cause of his death has yet to be determined.

Despite the tragedy, other members of the expedition team continued with their summit attempt the following morning. The Department of Tourism of Nepal confirmed that this marks the first casualty of a foreign climber on Everest this season.

Meanwhile, Santiago’s family, including Sumangil, released a statement requesting prayers and privacy during this difficult time:

“Our family is asking for prayers for the eternal repose of the soul of our beloved Engr. Philipp PJ Santiago II,” read the statement posted on Sumangil’s account.

“We also continue to pray for the safety and well-being of Karl Miguel Santiago during this difficult time,” the statement added, referring to Santiago’s nephew.

“The family respectfully requests privacy as we grieve and process these events. Your understanding, support, and prayers are deeply appreciated. Maraming Salamat po.”

Hours prior to the announcement of his passing, Sumangil had already requested prayers as Santiago made his summit push.

Aside from his personal goals, Santiago said he was climbing to raise awareness for his advocacies including battling childhood cancer.
