Kozhikode: Many pet owners in Kerala are voicing their concerns about the absence of proper facilities for the burial of deceased pets.

For many, pets are considered beloved family members, and their passing can be as painful as losing a family member. Unfortunately, Kerala currently lacks a dedicated crematorium for animals, leaving many pet owners struggling with how to give their pets a respectful farewell.

With a sharp increase in pet ownership post-Covid, including a rise in lap dogs and other pets, the demand for proper pet funeral services has grown. However, there are no dedicated animal crematoriums in the State at present. However, officials have stated that an electric crematorium under the Thrissur Corporation is expected to start operating within six months. This facility will cater to pets, excluding elephants.

Veterinary expert Dr Shahjahan Waheed emphasised the need for such facilities, comparing it to how one wouldn’t hand over a deceased relative’s body to someone else.

Neighbouring States lead in pet cremation services

Neighbouring states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have long had animal crematoriums and related services. These States offer private cremation services and specialised mortuaries (refrigerators) for keeping deceased animals. In addition to electric crematoriums, animals can be buried with personalised markers made of marble and granite.

Ritualistic funeral practices for pets

Dr. P. R. Vinodan of Malabar Pet Clinic emphasised the diverse funeral practices available elsewhere, such as ritualistic cremations and prayerful burials. He stressed that special burial services that align with the beliefs and needs of pet owners are essential and urgently needed.
