
Tots Carlos shines again for Creamline and secures Semifinals spot in thrilling victory over PLDT

MANILA, Philippines — Tots Carlos sustained her fine form as she exploded for 22 points as defending champion Creamline became the first local team to reach the semifinals of the 2023 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Invitational Conference after sweeping PLDT, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21, on Thursday at Philsports Arena.
After a two week break, the Cool Smashers didn’t miss a beat. The Cool Smashers haven’t lost a single set in three games to qualify for the second round. They will join Japanese team Kurashiki Ablaze, and Vietnam’s Kinh Bac – Bac Ninh.
Jema galanza, the reigning Invitationals MVP, also delivered 12 points, including two aces. Carlos, the Invitationals MVP, had 17 attacks and three aces.
The pair of hard-hitters joined forces to avoid a slow start during the third set where they were 11-14 down. Creamline’s 23-18 win was a result of Carlos’ attack, and Galanza ace.
Mika Reyes’ quick and timely attacks brought PLDT to within two points, 23-21. Carlos then scored back-toback kills, ending the match after one hour, 37 minutes.
“We’re really happy because we have an advantage coming to the next stage,” said Carlos in Filipino. “But we still have a lot to improve and we trust the program of the coaches for our team. We just follow their instructions and try to improve every day.”

Alyssa Valdez had her best game after returning from an injury. She scored 11 points, and made eight digs. Jia DeGuzman was the mastermind behind the Cool Smashers offensive with 22 outstanding receptions.
“It’s a good win for us today. We were able to secure the semifinal slot,” said Creamline coach Sherwin Meneses. “I think the team still improved despite the break. We have to prepare because we still have a lot of games.”
Coach Meneses said that Michele Gumabao, who had just returned from a trip to Europe of importance, will be back in action on Saturday against Akari.
PLDT fell to 1-1 at the third position of Pool A. Mean Mendrez was the only player with double-digit scoring with 10 points. Jovielyn Pardo finished with nine points, but she suffered an injury in the second game after a bad landing.
