Central States Dahlia Society Show: Noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. Get ready for an explosive burst of color that will leave you loving dahlias. Presented by the Central States Dahlia Society, this judged exhibit will feature 16 total displays using nearly 1,000 dahlia blooms ranging in size from a silver dollar to a dinner plate. Society members will be on hand to provide written information and to answer questions about dahlias. Blooms will be available for purchase at the end of show on Sunday from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Garden admission. For information, chicagobotanic.org.
Seed Swap: Noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton Ave., Arlington Heights. You can drop off, pick up and trade seeds, plants, flowers and vegetable harvests all season long. Library card not required. Crystal Lake Service League Housewalk: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, in downtown Crystal Lake. The annual Crystal Lake Service League Housewalk is the league’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Tour four homes within the Crystal Lake community to get a peek inside and experience each of their unique styles and amenities. Service League members and volunteers are on hand to enhance each of the house walk tours. They will point out notable details, history, and personal stories unique to each home. This great event will feature something for everyone; from history buffs to those interested in architecture or interior design, or those who are just curious and might enjoy a day of touring beautiful homes. Lombard Garden Club — Put Your Garden to Bed: 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the Lombard Community Building, 433 E. St. Charles Road, Lombard. Bill Karges will discuss what to prune, cut and divide, when it is appropriate to add perennials and bulbs, and what plants to leave as a resource for beneficial insects to over winter. Karges worked at Pioneer Garden and Feed in Villa Park for many years and now can be found at Ace Hardware in Lombard at the new garden center. Free; the public is welcome to attend. Garden Club of Inverness Luncheon: On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Garden Club of Inverness will be hosting its annual luncheon at Medinah Country Club with the theme “Sleigh Bells Ring.” The event will feature a silent auction, Christmas crafts, and a raffle in addition to a presentation on floral arrangements for the holidays. Tickets will be on sale for $75 in September and one need not be a member to attend. Last year the luncheon sold out quickly and was able to fund three $3,000 scholarships for students interested in ecology and horticulture.
