Health Department will Soon Break Ground on New Community Garden

By: Ryan Duey

The City recently approved the building of a Community Garden at the Clay County Health Department (CCHD). With official approval, CCHD is currently planning and designing the garden, with plans of having it ready for community members with a Ribbon Ceremony next Spring.

Nikki Burwell with CCHD, who is creating the garden, said everyone will have an opportunity to apply for a spot in the garden.

Burwell said the Washington Headliners 4-H group is volunteering their time on Sunday, October 13th to help start building the garden. The Clay County Conservation District is also helping by providing ten raised garden boxes. In January the public will have the opportunity to apply for a spot in the garden. This year there will be ten plots available, with the possibility of the garden growing in the future. Burwell said they will also teach patrons how to grow sustainable food.

There will also be a Community plot for anyone in the community, which will consist of strawberries, onions, and garlic. Burwell said they also plan on adding a pollination station. While many items and services have already been donated to the Health Department they are still in need of donations for items such as cinderblocks, seeds, and other materials.
