Freddie Aguilar, the legendary Filipino folk musician best known for his timeless hit Anak, has passed away at the age of 72. The news was confirmed by his former partner Josephine Quiepo, the mother of his children, including singer Maegan Aguilar, during an interview on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.

According to Josephine, the OPM artist died due to multiple organ failure. He lost his life while at the Philippine Heart Center.

“Pumanaw na po ang OPM icon na si Freddie Aguilar sa edad na 72,” Abunda announced on his show. “Kinumpirma po ito sa amin ng kaniyang ex-partner at ina ni Maegan Aguilar na si Josephine. Ayon kay Josie, binawian ng buhay kagabi si Ka Freddie sa Philippine Heart Center dahil sa multiple organ failure.”

Freddie Aguilar rose to fame in the late 1970s and became a powerful voice in Original Pilipino Music (OPM), with socially relevant songs and deep patriotic themes. Aside from Anak, his songs like Bayan Ko and Magdalena left an enduring mark on Filipino music and culture. His death marks the end of an era, leaving behind a musical legacy that will continue to resonate with generations to come.

Freddie Aguilar was born on February 5, 1953, and began performing OPM music in 1973. Throughout his five decades in the industry, he became known for songs with themes centered on family, patriotism, and social issues. During the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, he was appointed as the Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts and also served as a member of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
