Fallout RPG Collection Is Free on Epic Games Launcher

Key Takeaways

  • Epic Games offers the entire classic Fallout collection for free today on their launcher.
  • With Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics available, fans can explore origins of beloved wastelands.
  • Epic Games’ free games program aimed to increase their player count against Steam’s, but failed.

Fallout fans can take a trip back to the series’ roots as the entire classic collection is free on the Epic Games launcher today.

The classic collection includes the first Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout: Tactics. Although, if you actually like Fallout, you can probably skip Tactics.

Fans of the modern 3 to 76 Fallout games are in for a completely new experience with Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics, should you choose to play it.

Before the Lone Wanderer, Courier Six, or the Sole Survivor, there was the Vault Dweller, and his grandchild, the Chosen One; no one really remembers Tactic’s Warrior.

The classic Fallout games were isometric role-playing games focused on diverging story paths, interesting characters, and bittersweet decisions, not gameplay.

Setting the series’ tone and universe, they introduced us to the post-apocalyptic hell of stuck-in-1950s futuristic America and many recurring concepts, characters, icons, and locations. With The Master and Frank Horrigan, these games also had some of the best Fallout villains.

Epic Games’ choice to give out the collection now is no surprise. After the success of Amazon’s Fallout TV adaptation, all Fallout games saw a surge in their player numbers. Fallout 4 had a 160k player peak while 76 enjoyed a smaller 73k.

While leagues apart in gameplay, the classic games will still give seasoned and new Fallout fans a deeper look into the origins of their beloved wastelands.

Epic’s Not Generous, They Need Players

A few weeks ago, Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeny announced that hundreds of millions of free games had been redeemed each year through the Epic Games launcher. He said these free games were much more successful than “not so good investments” they’d made for platform exclusivity.

At first glance, Epic Games seems benevolent, wanting nothing more than to give gamers free games to enjoy. But, they’re a corporation, and corporations are businesses first. In fact, the entire free games program was a bid to push gamers away from Epic’s competition, Steam, which clearly did not work.

Sweeny’s comments may make it seem like Epic’s glad everyone’s getting free games, but that’s not necessarily true. This strategy has successfully brought in players, but it’s also the only reason many use the launcher in the first place.

Last year, in a post on X, Sweeny spoke about companies with generous policies initially, and then pulling the rug from under their users. The irony is apparently lost on Sweeny, as Epic canceled player-to-player trading on the Rocket League the same year.

There are no plans to change the free games program now whatsoever, but it’s important to be cautious regardless.

When you go to download the free Fallout collection, and Wild Car Football, remember that Vault-Tec and Nuka Cola aren’t real, but their inspirations are.
