Ex-Bethesda Dev Reveals Why Starfield Didn’t Resonate With All Gamers

Summary

  • Starfield’s failure to resonate with gamers may stem from being too sterile.
  • Despite mixed reception, Bethesda is dedicated to updating and improving Starfield.
  • Ex-developer Nate Purkeypile hopes for Bethesda to return to its roots for future titles.

A former Bethesda developer who worked on Starfield has given their take on why the game failed to resonate with many gamers. While the critical reception of Starfield was largely very positive, the consensus of gamers was a little more mixed all around.

Despite not every player enjoying Starfield, Bethesda has undeniably remained committed to the project and making it the best it can possibly be. The developer is still releasing new Starfield updates almost two years after its release, and the game is definitely in a better state than it was at launch. However, for some players, the window for grabbing their attention has long passed, so it’s commendable that updates are still released regardless.

Starfield Could Win PS5 Fans Over with an Easy Addition

As speculation about Starfield coming to the PS5 persists, Bethesda has an easy way to make exploration rewarding for players.

Speaking to Thumb Wars, former Bethesda developer Nate Purkeypile gave his thoughts on Starfield and its shortcomings in the eyes of many gamers. “I think Starfield is a bit too sterile of a game, and that’s why it doesn’t resonate with quite as many people.” He also spoke on his hopes for the studio’s future titles, saying, “I just hope they go back to their roots a bit and embrace the personal expression of devs and having things a bit weirder.” Even Starfield fans have no shortage of complaints about the game, but it’s interesting to see what someone who actually worked on it thinks.

Ex-Bethesda Developer Gives Their Opinion on Starfield’s Shortcomings

Purkeypile, who worked on all of Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Starfield, has been outspoken in the past about his views on Starfield. In the interest of balance, it should be noted that not every player feels this way – Starfield was still a strong performer for Bethesda, and with a Top Critic Average of 85 on review aggregator site OpenCritic, it clearly has its supporters. However, there is evidently a lot of feedback that Bethesda can use to improve its future products massively.

I think Starfield is a bit too sterile of a game…

There’s still plenty to come from Starfield. The rumor mill continues to turn, with Starfield still slated to launch on PlayStation 5 at some point this year. Bethesda has yet to confirm precisely when fans will be able to get their hands on the sci-fi RPG on Sony’s platform, although when it does release, it will have been a very long time coming.
