Dump Truck Plunges into Ravine, Five Dead

THE Caraga Municipal Police Office has confirmed that most of the 10 individuals involved in a fatal vehicular accident on the morning of Thursday, May 28, 2025 in Sitio Panlaisan, Barangay Pichon, Caraga, Davao Oriental were residents of Davao City, most of them laborers from Mandug.

The victims were aboard a Howo dump truck owned by Legacy Construction Company when the vehicle lost its brakes while navigating a steep and narrow road. The vehicle plunged approximately 80 meters into a ravine, resulting in the fatalities of five of the crew and injuring other five. 

The crew was working on an ongoing road construction project connecting Sitio Panlaisan to Sitio Butay.

Among the casualties were an engineer, a foreman, and several laborers. 

Initial investigations indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fall into the ravine and crash into a large rock below. 

Five of the workers managed to jump out of the truck before the impact and survived with injuries.

Emergency responders from the Caraga Municipal Police Station, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office immediately conducted rescue and retrieval operations, led by PCMS Clyde Piamonte.

The deceased were brought to the Caraga Municipal Health Office for identification, while the injured survivors are currently receiving medical treatment.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident and are looking into the construction company’s safety protocols. 

Local officials have extended their condolences and pledged assistance to the families of the victims.

As of this writing, SunStar Davao has reached out to responders, who confirmed that the victims, both deceased and injured, are at the municipal health center, while the investigation into the incident is ongoing. DEF
