Dog possibly shot by MPD officer in Highland Heights

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis Police Department is looking into a dog’s death that included one of its officers

An officer shot and killed a dog Wednesday around 1 a.m. on Beatrice Street between National Street and Highland Street.

We are not sure if MPD was already on the scene or responding to a scene when this happened.

Memphis Animal Services was also called to the scene.

A neighbor who lives in the area says she’s seen the dog before and is confused as to why MPD had to shoot and kill the dog.

“I am very much in support of the police and all of that, but the response seemed very cold,” said Kadie Steele. “It didn’t seem like anything was being done. She asked if anyone could help. I was asking could we go to a vet and one of the officers said that an ambulance would check the dog out. I said really because that seemed really farfetched. So I asked was this lip service or were they really going to help the dog out.”

Again, we do not know the circumstances surrounding what led to the shooting.

We are waiting to hear back from the police.
