Disturbing discovery triggers animal cruelty investigation in Galveston County

SAN LEON – The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a severe case of animal cruelty and neglect after they were tipped off over the weekend.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office, Houston SPCA, and Galveston County Animal Control responded to a home in San Leon on September 8 and discovered “many deceased animals” on the property.

The Houston SPCA said there were “scores of deceased cats, many with only skeletal remains left inside kennels, scattered throughout a deplorable property.”

They also located a blind draft horse in need of hoof and dental care. The horse also appeared to be underweight.

In a press release, The Galveston County Sheriff’s office said in part, “The owner surrendered the horse to the HSPCA where it is currently undergoing an examination and follow-up care. Several of the deceased animal remains that were discovered, will undergo an examination to determine the cause of death.”

Officials say the case will be referred to the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation is complete.
