VAN NUYS, Calif. (KABC) — DeFranko’s Submarines is a great place to visit in Van Nuys.
This tiny sandwich shop, located across the street the Van Nuys Airport serves up huge submarines.
“I make a sandwich that you are happy to pay for. That’s what I want,” DeFranko’s Owner Dru Alex, who has owned the shop since summer 1974.
She has seen her customers grow older and more mature.
“I have had little kids, sat here with their parents, come in, and now, they come in with their kids and their parents,” She smiled.
Alexander loves the steak and cheesy subs, but the pastrami is their biggest seller. Each sub comes topped with pickles, tomatoes, and onions. The bread and ingredients are fresh and ready for consumption.
“You get what you pay for and you get it with love,” Alexander
Subs are available in three sizes: $12 for small, $14 for large and $8 for an “DeMini-Me,” A tiny sub named for the iconic character in the Austin Powers movies.
“I put a sign up there “DeMini-Me” and it was a hit because a lot people, old ladies were coming in saying, ‘The small is too big, I can’t do it,'” Alexander “So I thought I’ve got to bring something in that a single person can come in and eat if they don’t want a whole sandwich, because they’re pretty big.”
DeFranko’s charm is a big part of its popularity.
The company has been operating out of the same location for almost 50 years. The 180 square foot space is just big enough to accommodate a counter, five stools and a few stools.
The patio has tables at the back.
“I have the best customers, I think, in the world. They really are great. They put up with lines and this whole thing but they’re good people, and I appreciate the love back,” Alexander said.

The store is open seven days a week, until 5 pm. Sundays are closed.
