(CNN) — Willy Wonka has returned. The chocolatier and torturer of naughty children is getting the prequel treatment in a new film starring Timothée Chalamet, coming to cinemas in December.
Chalamet’s first footage as Roald Dahl character Wonka was revealed on Tuesday. A young Wonka is seen setting off to disrupt the chocolate business and dismantle a candy cabal.
Chalamet takes over the role previously held by Johnny Depp (in 2005) and Gene Wilder (1971). Dahl’s 1964 novel is not a retold story. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” In what he describes as a “plucky, striving” take on the character, writer-director Paul King has imagined an “companion piece” To the 1971 film
