(CNN) — Willy Wonka has returned. The chocolatier and torturer of naughty children is getting the prequel treatment in a new film starring Timothée Chalamet, coming to cinemas in December.
Chalamet’s first footage as Roald Dahl character Wonka was revealed on Tuesday. A young Wonka is seen setting off to disrupt the chocolate business and dismantle a candy cabal.
Chalamet takes over the role previously held by Johnny Depp (in 2005) and Gene Wilder (1971). Dahl’s 1964 novel is not a retold story. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” In what he describes as a “plucky, striving” take on the character, writer-director Paul King has imagined an “companion piece” To the 1971 film
King said that the teaser would feature a singing and dancing Chalamet. “answers all the questions you never had” Wonka.
The director said that he read Dahl’s early drafts and accessed his personal archives to get ideas.
“As a writer, obviously I don’t remotely think of myself in the same breath as Roald Dahl,” He said “but it was very nice to be so inspired by that.”

“What’s so fabulous about him is you feel a lot of people his age would have been tempted to put on a superhero outfit and then sort of go and save the world,” He added. “And I managed to get him to put on a pair of heeled leather boots and do some tap dancing.”
