DILG welcomes Torre as chief PNP

THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has welcomed the appointment of Police Major General Nicolas Torre III as the new chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

In a statement, the DILG, which oversees the PNP, expressed full support to Torre.

“The President’s decision reflects a careful assessment of PMGen. Torre’s strong credentials and exemplary service. We are confident his leadership will drive transformation, innovation, and strengthen the PNP’s mandate to serve and protect,” DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said.

“We extend our congratulations to PNP Chief Torre as he takes on the challenge of leading our 228,000-strong police force. The DILG stands ready to work with him in advancing internal reforms, fighting illegal drugs and crime, and enhancing police visibility,” he added.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced Torre’s appointment Thursday, May 29.

Torre will replace outgoing PNP chief General Rommel Marbil whose term extension is set to expire on June 7.

The turnover ceremony for Torre’s assumption was set on June 2.

Torre is the first graduate of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNP) to hold the highest police post.

He is a member of the PNPA Tagapagpatupad class of 1993.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Marbil rallied the entire police force to throw their full support behind the incoming top cop, as he expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for giving him the opportunity to serve the Filipino people.

“PMGen. Torre is a dedicated, experienced, and principled officer. I am confident that he will continue to lead the PNP with integrity and vision. I urge every officer and personnel of the PNP to extend to him the same support and cooperation you have given me,” said Marbil.

The outgoing top cop expressed optimism that Torre will continue to lead the PNP in sustaining the gains of the anti-criminality campaign that has so far yielded results for the country’s peace and order environment.

As the leadership transition begins, Marbil emphasized the importance of unity and professionalism in sustaining the PNP’s momentum in implementing reform programs aligned with the administration’s Bagong Pilipinas governance agenda. (TPM/SunStar Philippines)
