Davao Light Announces Lower Electricity Rate for May Billing
DAVAO Light and Power Company (Davao Light) has announced a reduction in its residential electricity rate for May 2025, providing much-needed financial relief to consumers amid the ongoing dry season.
Effective for the billing period May 12 to June 10, the rate has dropped by P0.4461 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), bringing the new rate to P9.1053/kWh, down from P9.5514/kWh in April.
The power distributor attributed the decrease to lower power supply costs from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), where Davao Light sources a portion of its electricity.
WESM rates can fluctuate monthly depending on demand and supply conditions across the grid, and the lower market price this month allowed the company to pass on the savings to consumers.
This downward adjustment continues a trend of fluctuating power rates seen over the past few months. In February 2025, Davao Light implemented a significant drop to P8.4027/kWh, partly due to reduced generation charges and a one-time refund mandated by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).
Although the rate rose slightly in March and April, the latest reduction offers some relief as electricity consumption typically increases during hotter months.
Despite the rate drop, Davao Light advised customers to be mindful of their electricity usage. The utility company emphasized that lower rates do not automatically result in lower bills if consumption significantly rises, as is common during the summer due to increased use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and electric fans.
The company encourages customers to conserve energy by unplugging idle appliances, using energy-efficient equipment, and maximizing natural ventilation. These practices can help households manage their electricity expenses while maintaining comfort during the season’s high temperatures. DEF
