Davao Kagawad Shot by Friend Over P100K Debt; Gun Misfires
A BARANGAY councilor in Tibungco, Davao City, is determined to file criminal charges against his long-time friend who allegedly attempted to shoot him over an unpaid P100,000 debt, despite expressing personal forgiveness for the suspect.
The victim, known as “Kagawad Eno,” was attacked early Monday morning, May 26, 2025, while preparing to leave his residence. The suspect, identified by police as alias “Ritchie,” a 37-year-old construction worker from Purok 9, reportedly approached him from behind and tried to shoot him with a .38 caliber revolver. The firearm, however, misfired.
Authorities said that the suspect allegedly pulled out a second weapon, a .45 caliber pistol, but the official managed to block the attempt. A struggle ensued, with Eno’s son, Kirby, helping to disarm and subdue the assailant. The .45 pistol discharged during the confrontation, but no one was injured.
Police from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) arrived and arrested the suspect on the spot. Officers recovered both firearms, including live rounds and a used shell lodged in the .45 pistol.
According to DCPO spokesperson Captain Hazel Caballero, charges being prepared against the suspect include attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition under Republic Act 10591, and violation of the Omnibus Election Code, due to the ongoing election-related gun ban.
Meanwhile, in a radio interview with RMN Davao, Kagawad Eno clarified that he had never pressured the suspect to repay the debt, but he merely reminded him through calls and text messages.
The suspect reportedly stopped responding before the issue escalated.
The case is expected to be formally filed in the coming days as investigations continue. DEF
