A Kimberling City church is renewing an annual tradition which allows pet owners to get a special blessing for their fur babies.
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, located at 3 Northwoods Dr. (at James River Rd.) in Kimberling City, will open its parking lot up to animals and their owners for the Blessing of the Animals Service on Friday, Oct. 4, at 5:30 p.m. The service will be held in the parking lot of the church and pets are to be in a carrier or on a leash. The blessing is a way to honor the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church spokesperson Judy McKee said the services are open to animals and owners from all denominations.
“The church views their Blessing of the Animals service as a celebration of God’s great and diverse world filled with so many beautiful creatures,” McGee said. “This is an opportunity to thank God for the blessing of your special pet.”
Every year, during this service, St. Mark’s hosts the event and offers blessings to many dogs and cats.
The Reverend Anne Cheffey will deliver a special service in the parking lot. Printed booklets will be passed out so those in attendance can follow along with the service. After the service each pet and their human can receive a special blessing just for them from Rev. Cheffey. If a pet can not attend, photos can be blessed as well.
“Even though this is a serious service with a long tradition, it is a fun event with lots of tail wagging and socializing,” McGee said.
