Happy Hour at Longue Vue

What’s in bloom will be the topic at Longue Vue House and Gardens at 4 p.m. Thursday as staff and supporters gather to cap off Museum Month.

The free public event will feature specialty gardens staff discussing the current blossoms on the grounds, as well a free glass of wine while wandering through the foliage at 7 Bamboo Road in New Orleans.

Jefferson tree school is Oct. 2

Calling all architects, arborists, contractors, landscape architects, engineers, planners and concerned citizens: A one-day conference will focus on the care and preservation of the tree canopy in Jefferson Parish.

Friends of Jefferson the Beautiful will hold the free Carey Hammett Tree School on Oct. 2; registration is required by Sept. 24.

The event, slated for the Jefferson Performing Arts Center, 6400 Airline Drive, in Metairie is an annual look at the urban landscape and how best to maintain its trees.

The event begins at 8 a.m. and includes both local and national presenters, including Beau Brodbeck, Brian Kane, Skip Kincaid, Ace Torre and Lauren Williams.

Tickets are on sale for the annual Preservation Resource Center’s Design Luncheon on Oct. 9 at the Audubon Tea Room, 6500 Magazine St.

The event’s featured speaker is Alexa Hampton, a New York designer recently named to Architectural Digest’s AD100, House Beautiful’s Top Designers list and Elle Décor’s A-List. She recently released her latest book, “Design, Style & Influence,” which will be available at the luncheon.

The organization has contracted 8 local masons to perform the repair work.


Friends of Cabildo lectures continue

The Fall Member Lecture Series, covering a variety of topics, continues with a series on New Orleans history and legacies.

  • Sept. 24: Theresa McCulla, author of “Insatiable City: Food and Race in New Orleans”
  • Oct. 8: Anthony Stanonis, “New Orleans Pralines: Plantation Sugar, Louisiana Pecans and the Marketing of Southern Nostalgia”
  • Oct. 15: Joseph Jewell, “White Man’s Work: Race and Middle Class Mobility into the Progressive Era”
  • Nov. 5: Francis Kolb Turnbell, “Spanish Louisiana: Contest for Borderlands, 1763-1805”
  • Nov. 12: Bruce Spizer, “The Beatles at City Park at 60”

Volunteer at City Park

A variety of cleanup days and initiatives are on tap at City Park to improve and maintain the extensive urban green space. Those coming up during the week of Sept. 21-28 include:

  • Litter Abatement Campaign: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Volunteer Center, 1031 Harrison Ave.
  • Horticulture Projects: 9 a.m. Tuesday, Volunteer Center, 1031 Harrison Ave.
  • Big Lake Native Plant Trail Restoration Project: 9 a.m. Friday. Horticulture activities include weeding, removal of plant debris, mulching, shoveling and other tasks to maintain native plant beds. Meet at the Big Lake Native Trail near 7 Friedrichs Ave.
