Black Mountain man convicted of animal cruelty

A Black Mountain man has pled guilty and was convicted of Animal Cruelty on Thursday, Sept. 12.

On Nov. 20, 2023, theBuncombe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Crimes Unit responded to a call at 141 Cragmont Road in Black Mountain, N.C. where responding officers found the decomposing remains of two Caine Corses, who appeared to be “abandoned and starved to death,” according to a release from the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).

The release said the responding officers,Corporal Ecklund and Deputy Draper, were informed by the property owners that Tyson Holloway owned the animals, who were later brought in by the Animal Crimes Unit and tested for necropsy at theN.C. Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. The release said testing confirmed the animal’s cause of death as starvation.

“The Buncombe County Animal Crimes Unit comprises specially trained, dedicated professionals,” said Major John Ledford. “The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office takes all complaints of animal cruelty seriously and works tirelessly to identify, investigate, and criminally charge anyone responsible for these heinous acts — we appreciate the willingness of the public to notify the appropriate authorities and provide information crucial to these investigations.”

The BCSO charged Holloway with two counts of failure to dispose of animal remains, two counts of abandonment and two counts of animal cruelty, according to the release. Holloway pled guilty and was convicted of one count of animal cruelty.
