Beautiful new 2D Metroidvania Fallen Tear The Ascension sets release window
From Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown to Nine Sols, Animal Well, and many more besides, we’ve been spoiled by great Metroidvania games in recent years. Making a fresh appearance at today’s OTK Games Expo, Fallen Tear: The Ascension is an upcoming action platformer that’s very much caught my eye. Boasting absolutely beautiful 2D art design, a giant world inspired by Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild, a clever JRPG-style party system providing mid-combat assists, and a soundtrack crafted by Dark Souls composer Motoi Sakuraba, this is one for your Steam wishlist.
Fallen Tear: The Ascension follows the tale of the young Hira as he heads out in search of the truth about his past. The upcoming Metroidvania previously caught attention when it smashed its Kickstarter goal in just six hours, and seeing another glimpse of it in action has only reinvigorated my desire to get hands-on with the final game. Its stunning, hand-drawn worlds weave in a manner reminiscent of the Ori games, and give way to secret design that takes its cues from the mighty Shadow of the Colossus.

Your journey will see you gather numerous ascension abilities to boost Hira’s skills – but he doesn’t fight alone. Nodding to the likes of Valkyrie Profile and Suikoden, a party scheme called Fated Bonds gathers together all the companions you meet, with many providing additional buffs, boons, or even the ability to jump in to assist you in the midst of battle. As the name suggests, your interactions with them will shape their fates, and even the very environment around you.
The world of Raoah shifts and evolves as your journey progresses, based on your actions, skills, and the decisions you make. You’ll be kept plenty busy with taxing puzzles, obstacles to overcome, and terrifying boss fights that will require careful use of your skills to defeat. Rounding out the picture is a soundtrack scored by guest composer Motoi Sakurabe, famed for his work on the likes of Dark Souls, Golden Sun, and Star Ocean.
Winter Crew and CMD Studios plan to launch Fallen Tear: The Ascension in the first quarter of 2026. You can wishlist it now on Steam to stay up to date with its progress.
