BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control is asking all animal-loving Palm Beach County residents to “foster” a shelter pet during Hurricane Milton. Here is what PBCACC shared with BocaNewsNow.com on Tuesday:

With Hurricane Milton on the way to Palm Beach County, the homeless dogs and cats in the community need help. The Palm Beach County Public Safety Department Animal Care and Control Division (PBCACC) is looking for generous community members who are willing to open their homes to a dog or cat for two to three weeks, with a minimum of 14 days.

PBCACC has been facing a growing over-capacity crisis since 2022. Annual intake for homeless pets has increased by almost 2,000 since the pandemic. PBCACC’s facility has enough kennels to comfortably house 144 dogs and 100 cats at a time, however the shelter has recently had over 200 dogs and 150 cats in its care.

With the storm approaching, PBCACC wants to ensure that the county’s homeless pets are safe and comfortable. The best place for a pet to be is in a home.

Fosters allow for the shelter to open kennel space which is critical when an influx of animals is expected due to being displaced by the storm. Fostering a pet saves two lives: the one that goes to a foster home and the one that is placed in the open kennel spot.

Fostering with PBCACC is totally free. The shelter will provide all of the supplies fosters need; all the foster needs to do is provide the necessary care and love that allows the pet to feel safe and secure.

To learn more about fostering a dog or cat this storm season, please call (561) 233-1281 or email accfoster@pbc.govThe shelter is located at 7100 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach, FL, 33411.

PBCACC is dedicated to promoting the health, safety and welfare of both people and animals in the community. For more information on PBCACC’s services, please visit pbcgov.org/animal or call 561-233-1200. Join PBCACC in making Palm Beach County a safe and compassionate place for all animals.
