Animal Care Centre of Strathmore warns dog owners of foxtails – StrathmoreNow.com

With autumn underway, foxtails are starting to become a problem in the area.

That’s according to the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore who made a post on their Facebook page warning dog owners about the issues that foxtails can cause.

“Foxtails become a problem when the grass heads start to break apart,” wrote the centre. “The spiky seeds can easily get stuck in your dog’s fur, ears, paws, or throat leading to irritation or even infections.”

The centre also gave some tips on how to keep an eye out for foxtails and how to prevent them from causing issues with pets.

These tips include:

  • Checking your dog’s fur and paws for foxtails after walks.
  • Avoiding tall grass and sticking to well-maintained paths.
  • Knowing the signs of foxtails, which include dogs pawing at their face, shaking their heads, coughing, or showing difficulty swallowing.

The centre recommends that dog owners take their pets to the veterinary clinic if signs of foxtails are spotted.
