The incident, captured by a dashcam video, involved a tricycle, a private car, and a large wing van, raising concerns about road safety and discipline.
The fatal crash occurred in Barangay Ubaliw, Polangui. Dashcam footage, aired on GMA’s “24 Oras Weekend” and ABS-CBN’s “TV Patrol,” depicted a tricycle initially traversing the outer lane of the highway.
The tricycle then unexpectedly veered to its right, making contact with a passing car. While the car immediately swerved to avoid a major collision, this minor contact caused the tricycle driver to lose control.

The tricycle then careened into the opposite lane, directly colliding with an oncoming wing van.
According to Polangui PNP, the tricycle was carrying a mother and her two children. A 62-year-old female passenger of the tricycle was rushed to a hospital but was tragically declared dead on arrival.
The 19-year-old tricycle driver and another passenger, identified as the driver’s sibling, sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Authorities are actively searching for the driver of the car involved in the initial contact, as their immediate departure from the scene complicates the investigation.
The driver of the wing van, on the other hand, is currently under police custody at the Polangui PNP station and may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in hom1cide, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property.
The incident has sparked extensive discussion among netizens, particularly regarding road discipline, especially among tricycle drivers.
The dashcam video, widely shared on social media, shows the tricycle attempting to switch lanes from what some commentators identified as the “fast lane,” which is typically reserved for faster-moving private vehicles.
Online comments reflected a mix of anger, sorrow, and debate over fault. Many users lamented the perceived lack of discipline among some tricycle drivers.
“Tricycle. Common road rules dictate slower vehicles must stay on the right (ie motorcycles, bikes, tricycles). Frustrating that when I drove in Bicol a few days back may mga tricycle na nasa gitna ng highway and they will shoot back a mad glance at you when you honk at them and overtake lol. Para sa safety naman nila,” one Reddit user wrote.
Another added, “Walang alam sa road rules karamihan ng tricycle driver e lalo na sa probinsya, bakit ba kasi binibigyan ng mga lisensya mga yan.”
There was also sympathy for the wing van driver, who many felt was not at fault but was nevertheless implicated.
“A truck driver’s in jail again, even though it’s not his fault,” a comment read. The incident also highlighted the long-standing issue of tricycles operating on national highways despite regulations, a topic that has often been debated as an “anti-poor” measure.
“Trikes used to be banned on the national highway, but a lot of people complained that it was anti-poor… so they just let it slide. But most of the trike drivers (not all of them) have no discipline,” a netizen explained.
The tragic accident serves as a somber reminder of the critical need for all motorists to adhere to traffic laws, maintain lane discipline, and prioritize road safety to prevent such devastating outcomes.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to piece together the full details of the collision.
