A Unified Marketplace for Digital Creators, Launching in October, epic games, fab 2024, digital marketplace, creators, unreal engine, marketplace, sketchfab, quixel

Epic Games is set to revolutionize the digital content marketplace with the launch of Fab, a new open platform aimed at bringing creators together in a single space to buy, sell, and share digital assets. Slated for mid-October, Fab is designed to merge four of Epic’s most popular platforms—Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab, ArtStation Marketplace, and Quixel—into one unified experience. This move is expected to significantly streamline the creation and exchange of digital content across various industries.

The new platform promises to be a game-changer, offering creators the opportunity to build sustainable businesses through an 88/12 revenue share model, meaning creators will take home 88% of their sales revenue. Additionally, as part of its launch, Fab is offering publishers a 100% revenue share on sales of Fab Standard-licensed products until the end of 2024, giving creators a powerful incentive to get on board early.

Epic Games has also made it clear that the transition will be smooth for current users of Unreal Engine Marketplace and Sketchfab. As of today, Unreal Engine Marketplace sellers can migrate their products to Fab using a dedicated Publishing Portal. Sketchfab users will follow suit in early October with the release of a migration tool to transfer their licensable content to Fab. ArtStation Marketplace will continue to operate independently for the time being, with migration to Fab scheduled for 2025. Meanwhile, Quixel Megascans content will also move to Fab, with free access continuing through 2024 under Fab’s Standard License.

In addition to supporting multiple engines such as Unreal Engine and Unity, Fab will offer compatibility with a broad range of content creation tools, including Blender, Maya, Cinema 4D, and Adobe Substance 3D. This multi-platform and multi-engine approach ensures that creators working across different mediums will find value in Fab, making it a true one-stop destination for digital assets.

At launch, Fab will offer an array of features to enhance the user experience. This includes a next-generation 3D viewer, which allows real-time inspection of assets, and powerful search and discovery tools, enabling creators to find exactly what they need in the right file format and at the right price. Fab will also introduce multiple license types with tiered pricing, allowing creators to offer their work for both personal and professional use. Notably, Fab will give creators control over how their work is used in relation to generative AI programs, a significant move in an industry increasingly concerned with AI’s role in content creation.

In partnership with Adobe, Fab is also offering a launch promotion that allows users who publish a Fab-licensed product or make a purchase of at least $25 to receive a free six-month subscription to Adobe Substance Painter and Modeler, further enhancing the value of the platform for creators.

As Fab evolves, Epic Games plans to introduce even more advanced features, including support for new file formats like Minecraft and Roblox assets, as well as MetaHumans. Improvements such as a ratings and review system, product FAQs, and enhanced analytics will be rolled out to improve both the buying and selling experience. The platform will also integrate seamlessly with Unreal Engine and UEFN, allowing creators to access Fab content directly within the editor.

For current users of Unreal Engine Marketplace, the transition to Fab is straightforward. If sellers do not proactively migrate their products before Fab’s launch, their content will automatically transfer, though creators are encouraged to update their licenses to improve product discoverability and take advantage of the temporary 100% revenue share. Similarly, Sketchfab users will still be able to access purchased content through their profile, and a migration tool will assist them in moving their assets to Fab.

For Quixel users, the launch of Fab marks a shift. Although Megascans will remain free under Fab’s Standard License through 2024, the majority of the content will become paid starting in 2025, with only limited assets available for free. Epic will discontinue automatic renewals for Quixel subscriptions, and current subscribers can convert their paid balances to Epic Wallet credit when Fab launches.

As for ArtStation, its marketplace will join Fab in 2025, while the rest of the platform will remain as-is, continuing to serve its artist community by offering portfolio tools and educational resources.

With Fab, Epic Games is creating a marketplace that promises to be more than just a hub for buying and selling—it’s shaping up to be a dynamic, future-forward space for creators to thrive. By combining the assets and communities of Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab, ArtStation, and Quixel, Fab is set to redefine the digital creation landscape, opening up new possibilities for creators everywhere.
