Netflix will stop updating app for these iPhones, iPads unless absolutely necessary: What it means for users

Netflix is reportedly scaling back its support for older iPhones and iPads. According to the company, while the streaming service will continue to work on these devices for now, there won’t be an update unless absolutely necessary.
The Verge cited Netflix spokesperson MoMo Zhou as saying that the company won’t be releasing further updates for the iOS 16 version of the app.
It was reported that Netflix is showing an alert to users who are using their iPhones and iPads running iOS 16 devices saying, “We’ve updated the Netflix app! To use the latest version, install iOS 17 or later.”

What users of older iPhone and iPad can do

Since there won’t be an update for those who are using devices running iOS 16, updating the OS of their phones is the easiest solution. To update:

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If there are multiple software updates available, choose the latest one to install.
  • Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install, tap it to download the update.
  • Enter your passcode, then tap Install Now.

Those devices that cannot be updated to iOS 17, such as the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus handsets, and Apple’s first-generation iPad Pro and iPad 5 tablets, can still continue watching Netflix but an update fixing bugs and other security concerns on those devices are not guaranteed.
As mentioned, Netflix will update the app for these devices for critical errors. Another option is that people can use a web browser to watch their content.
