Fields of Mistria: How to Breed Animals
After repairing the mill and completing Hayden’s follow-up quest in Fields of Mistria, you can start buying chickens and cows. To obtain more animals such as ducks and sheep, you’ll need to upgrade Hayden’s farm. The most obvious way to get animals for your coops and barns is to adopt them from Hayden’s shop. Another way is to breed them, and if you want to start unlocking different colored breeds, you’ll want to take advantage of Mistria‘s animal breeding mechanic. However, it isn’t enough to have one male and female of a species.
Where to Buy Heart Shaped Treats
Hayden’s Shop
In order to breed animals, you’ll need one adult male and female of each species (both must have 2 hearts of affection or more), and a Heart Shaped Treat. Fortunately, you can get everything you need at Hayden’s farm (Sweetwater Farm). The quickest way to reach this is to take the left path from your farm. Here’s every animal you can get in Fields of Mistria as of the Early Access release:
- Cows and Chickens (complete “The Mill Restoration Project” and “Tea with Hayden”)
- Sheep, Ducks, Horses, Rabbits (upgrade Hayden’s farm)
- Capybara and Alapacas (unlocks in winter if you’ve upgraded Hayden’s farm)
The best way to raise your animals’ affection is to pet them every day and feed them by hand. If you reach Ranching Tier 2 (lvl 15), you can buy the Welcome Home I perk (20 Essence). This will ensure that any animal you obtain via breeding or adopting will start with 1 heart of affection. If you manage to reach Ranching Tier 3 (lvl 30), you can get Welcome Home II (70 Essence). This ensures your newborn animals will start with 2 hearts. However, you can’t breed baby animals, so even if it has 2 hearts, you’ll have to wait until it fully matures before you can feed it Heart Shaped Treats.
Each species has its own Heart Shaped Treat. You will need to buy two and feed one to the male, and the other to the female. Depending on the type of animal, the prices at Hayden’s store will vary.

How to Get Different Colored Animals
How to Get Tier 2+ Animals
When you first unlock a species, you’ll only be able to purchase Tier 1 animals. In Fields of Mistria, you can get animals with unique colors. For example, Tier 3 animals can be pink, blue, or purple. Tier 6 animals are season-exclusive. Since you’ll be starting with Tier 1 animals, you’ll need to breed them and see what you get.
You’ll likely get a Tier 2 animal on your first try, but you could get lucky and get a Tier 3. After you’ve obtained a colored animal via breeding, you can buy more of them from Hayden’s store. This is a good way to buy and breed Tier 3 animals if you’re looking to have a barn/coop full of colorful livestock. While the mechanics aren’t 100% known, you’re more likely to get higher-tier animals by breeding Tier 3 and above.
