Gateway Pet Guardians ask animal lovers to come adopt a pet

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – A nonprofit animal shelter in East St. Louis is asking for animal lovers to come adopt or foster a furry friend after the flooding at St. Clair Animal Control on July 16.

The Gateway Pet Guardians (GPG) took in 68 dogs during the flood, and the community showed up to foster a dog for two weeks while the GPG worked to handle the flooding.

“Now that the two weeks has lapsed, we have at least 20 dogs coming back to the shelter this week and no open kennels,” Operations Director Jill Henke said. “We call this rescue math and right now the math ain’t mathing, we need help from our incredible community of animal lovers.”

The GPG had reduced adoption fees to $50 for adult dogs and cats.

“No appointment needed, just come on down and let our matchmakers find you the perfect pet for your family. Thanks to the amazing fosters who took the flood dogs home for 2 weeks, we know so much more about them including how well they do with other pets and kiddos as well as how they are doing with house training,” Adoption and Foster Manager Amanda Loelike said.

The Gateway’s Pet Resource Center is open anytime Tuesday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. or Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
