A communitywide gathering took place on a beautiful day in Fredonia’s Barker Commons to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Fredonia Garden Club. Members of the community and invited guests took part in the festivities during the afternoon.

Several area elected officials attended the celebration. New York State Sen. George Borrello, Village of Fredonia Mayor Michael Ferguson, Chautauqua County Executive’s representative James Feldmann, all spoke and presented proclamations to Annabelle Hahn and Deb Messere, Co-Presidents of the Club, honoring this historic event. Marcia Becker and Melissa Marcus, representing the Eighth District of New York State Garden Clubs, were also in attendance.

Vases of roses from the gardens of member, Shaun Lord, graced the tables under the tent. A variety of tea sandwiches were provided by member, Kim Woodward, and beautifully decorated mini cupcakes, provided by The Cakery, along with beverages, were served throughout the afternoon.

Speakers for the occasion were John Ruska, former President of the New York State Bluebird Society, who gave a wonderful slideshow presentation on bluebirds. John and his wife, Bev, are members of the Lake Erie Bird Club and maintain a nesting box at Point Gratiot Park. Alice Przybycien, owner of Flowers by Anthony, created several lovely fresh flower arrangements. Garden Club member, Robin Carr, gave a very informative talk on native plants.

Guests had an opportunity to view the many articles and memorabilia that were on display in the gazebo. Minutes of the very first meeting of the club in 1924, as well as handwritten articles of club activities from the early years and photographs and articles from recent years, were enjoyed by many.

At the conclusion of the afternoon, a drawing was held and several attendees were awarded gifts donated by area businesses. Add Lumber, Barnes Greenhouse, Blue June Blooms, Cutco Cutlery, Home Depot, Patton Electric, and Yerico Farms all generously donated items for the drawing.

The Fredonia Garden Club was established in 1924 with a group of nine women who were interested in gardening. The first meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Frank Darling on Forest Place. The Club continues today with many beautification projects and plantings at various locations throughout the Village.
