IPhone SE 4 To First Apple 5G Modem, A18 Chip

Bloomberg previously reported that the iPhone SE will be launching early next year, while corroborating prior claims that it would look mostly like the iPhone 14. More recent details have surfaced, showing that it may come with hardware more modern than the mould that it fits in.

9to5Mac cites sources that claim that the iPhone SE 4 will be getting the same A18 chip that is found in the iPhone 16. Which is probably not too big of a surprise considering the phone was also claimed to be capable of Apple Intelligence features. The report also notes that it will be using the 48MP main camera and 12MP secondary shooter from the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus.

But arguably more impressive for the iPhone SE 4 is that it will be the device used to debut Apple’s first 5G chip since acquiring Intel’s part of the business. Codenamed “Centauri”, it will also be handling WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS duties in addition to mobile data.

It’s a little surprising to see the iPhone SE 4, which is supposed to be Apple’s budget-friendly offering for the smartphone space, be the one to debut the brand’s own 5G modem. New tech usually gets introduced to the Pro line, if not the Pro Max model specifically, but the report claims that this is some sort of experiment by the bitten fruit brand.
