In 2024, US consumers spent $59.3 billion on video games, with $51.3bn allocated to games content.
That’s according to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) annual report which showed that spending on hardware and accessories reached $4.9bn and $3.2bn, respectively.
The report also found that 83% of US households used at least one video game device, with mobile being the most popular platform with 72% of households and individual gamers aged 8+ (82%).
Mobile also dominates across all age groups, with Gen X showing the highest engagement at 87% on mobile.
Mobile at the forefront
Gender trends show females favour mobile gaming (86%) more than males (77%), whereas males are more active on PC, console, and VR.
Moreover, a platform crossover analysis revealed that 21% of gamers use all three major platforms, but 31% play exclusively on mobile.
As for the top games in 2024, Monopoly Go led in revenue for mobile, followed by Royal Match and Roblox.
Other long-standing hits like Candy Crush Saga, Pokémon GO, and Coin Master continued to perform well, showing mobile developers’ focus on casual and social experiences.
“For decades, our industry has pushed the boundary for what is possible in entertainment,” said ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis. It’s now pushing the boundary for what is possible beyond entertainment.
“From inspiring movies, music, and TV, to transforming sports, classrooms, and doctor’s offices, video games have the momentum to inspire the next wave of innovation in the United States – all while continuing to bring fun and create memories in our homes.”
