We’re actually getting an official new Thief game, but there’s a major catch
A new Thief game. For anyone who remembers the halcyon years of The Dark Project, The Metal Age, and Deadly Shadows, that’s surely one of the most pleasing sentences imaginable, especially if they were stung by Square Enix’s questionable 2014 reboot. And yes, it’s happening. The series that defined stealth, inspired Deus Ex, and gave us Garrett is finally, officially back. But I’m afraid to say there’s a catch. Depending on your hardware setup, the new Thief game, Legacy of Shadow, might be off limits for you. This is Half-Life Alyx all over again.
Co-created by Eidos-Montréal, Metro Awakening developer Vertigo Games, and Maze Theory, Thief Legacy of Shadow is – you guessed it – a VR exclusive. You play Magpie, a young thief, suffering under the draconian rule of Lord Ulysses Northcrest. They might not be Garrett, but Magpie certainly has the stealth game icon’s cloak and trademark mechanical eye. You can see Legacy of Shadow in action below.

Revealed at tonight’s Sony State of Play, Legacy of Shadow is currently slated to be released for PSVR2, at some time during 2025. I see lockpicking, roof running, and a lot of hiding in the shadows – all the hallmarks of Looking Glass and Ion Storm’s erstwhile PC legend. But I have to say, I was hoping the return of Thief would be…well, not restricted to VR. We’ll see what happens. In the meantime, you can already wishlist Legacy of Shadow on the PS Store.
Alternatively, try some of the other best VR games, or maybe the best old games.
